Description
S. Nicholson of Sheffield made this slim, elegant, spear-point (single-edged) bowie knife, circa 1850s-1860s. From a consigned collection. The knife is 10-1/2 inches long, with a light, flat-ground, narrow-tang, spear-point blade that is 6 inches long. The one-piece handle is made of smooth cattle horn. The pointed oval guard and the embossed ferrule and pommel are made of nickel silver. The scabbard is a standard Sheffield type made of pasteboard wrapped with morocco leather veneer, red with gold stamping. The scabbard has its original nickel silver throat, lacking the frog stud, but is missing the tip. S. NICHOLSON/ BROOMHALL/ WORKS/ SHEFFIELD is stamped on the ricasso. The initial S. looks to be a die modification -- the better known Nicholson was Willliam. LAND OF THE FREE/ AND THE HOME OF THE BRAVE is the motto in the etched panel out on the blade. Offered AS IS. The blade appears full. Note spots of rust and some pitting. The etched panel appears complete, but faint. The blade has started slightly from the handle (see close-up above) but is solid. The horn handle is checked, and has some areas of insect damage (see pictures). Guaranteed to be as described. All Sales Final -- refund only if item is not substantially as described.
