The Kukri, with its markedly downward curved blade, has long been identified with the Gurkha Warriors of Nepal. The Gurkhas were ferocious mercenaries who have wielded this blade for over 150 years in the service of the British Empire. The Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri was inspired by Cold Steel President, Lynn C. Thompson’s close association with Dr. Maung Gyi. Dr. Gyi is the chief instructor of the American Bando Association, and a renowned martial artist with wide-ranging knowledge and skills. Thompson added several improvements to this knife with input from Dr. Gyi including a longer, narrower point and more distal tapering to the spine. It is, without a doubt the best Kukri in the world today! If you aren’t familiar with Carbon V, it was Cold Steel’s original high carbon steel that they used on many of their top of the line knives. This steel is renowned for its ability to hold an edge under heavy use conditions and is still easy to re-sharpen when it becomes necessary. Unfortunately, the factory producing Carbon V has practically gone out of business despite Cold Steel’s efforts to support them. As a result, Cold Steel no longer offers knives in Carbon V. Cold Steel is continuing to manufacture most of the Carbon V knives with different types of steel, but for many of us there will never be a real substitute for Carbon V.
